Google Maps to Rename 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America' for US Users (reuters.com)

It is funny that a common refrain on social media regarding Deepseek is "try looking up anything about Tiananmen or Taiwan", when this is the kind of thing happening at home. What's next, Google Maps redraws the American borders to include Canada? The Russian borders to include Ukraine?

I am equally confused about the false equivalence arguments. All of the examples you cited are bad to various degrees, and one of the tricks authoritarians use is to do outrageous things and leave us guessing as to whether they “really mean it” or not.

Hint: if they get away with it, they meant it. If there are consequences, they “were just joking guys, geez, so sensitive!”

As for corporations accommodating governments that behave badly, that’s nothing new. The spice must flow, after all.

It's also a way of incrementally forcing their supporters to humiliate themselves, bending the knee to promote crazy excuses for dumb/evil things.

This strains and breaks the supporter's social relationships with everyone outside the cult, eventually stranding them in a prison of their own making.

narcissists do that, there could be a connection.

A name is not a drawing, nor is a name a map. Nor is a name change a territorial change.

Confusing, yes. All the more confusing when one wants something to be wrong, but there isn't.

See also "Board on Geographic Names".

The fact that you are equating changing the name of a geological feature to crushing humans beneath bulldozers and hosing them down a storm drain is absurd.

how about they don’t, and maintain a shred of integrity. this is the stupidest timeline

What do (completely arbitrary) geographic names (as maintained by the US government) have to do with integrity?

Do not be mistaken.

While everyone worries about such minor trivia, the Chief is replacing a host of public servants with his own cronies, all in the name of DOGE. For those familiar with medieval history, that's exactly what every tyrant/lord/baron/... did to get rid of any enemies, and ensure his own son would rule after his death.

Also, I guess a significant part of public spending will be redirected to the oligarchs that attended his crowning ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H nomination. That could be a problem with those on a minimum wage, or already working two jobs, but hey, isn't everyone in the US a millionaire?

From an English perspective I think the Tudor period fits even better than Medieval. A semblance of government with an unpredictable and capricious monarch.

Medieval? Par for the course for modern dictators, see Putin or Xi Jinping. It's the default modus operandi.

I'm sure your TV told you it was a thing of the past, hence your anger. Stupidity is often taken advantage of. Imagine that.

It's called the "spoils system" and it's still very much alive and very common among leftists in the US, eg New York State and City.

Truth will tamp down the anger, mostly because you'd be angry all the time and get exhausted. I recommend books, personally. "Tales from the Sausage Factory: Making Laws in New York State" for example discusses your topic. You will have to really, really put in work in to be angry at [checks notes] Trump or anyone anywhere near associated with the GOP.

Stupidity was certainly taken advantage of in November.

History will prove you right, but I think in ways you did not intend.

The good guys won. Get over it.

Got his sharpie out again.

Who cares? It's a name. Let's talk about how he wants to move all the Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan.

What a crazy fever dream. Absolutely surreal.

> The Trump administration's Interior Department said on Friday it had officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and the Alaskan peak Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, to Mount McKinley.

Somehow renaming Denali is even dumber. No one even cared about "Mount McKinley".

I am always surprised that after decades of not caring, all it takes is Trump and all of sudden people care about something. In this case, geographic names.

If that man says breathing is good, we're really in for it.

"If Mr. McMurphy doesn't want to take his medication orally, I'm sure we can arrange that he can have it some other way. But I don't think that he would like it."

I think he should have named it The Gulf of Trump.

There's as much chance of my calling it one thing as t'other.

Everyone still remembers when George W. Bush was gonna rename French Fries to Freedom Fries though, right?
