I think things like this are very individual. I recently “dropped off” my kid in the UK for a couple of weeks, then picked him up after that. That’s a total of 40-odd hours in a plane.
I’d buy the AVP just for that experience. The only time it was off my face was the one night-time sleep flight, and eating. I don’t find it uncomfortable to use, but I do make sure I’m (at least somewhat) lying down for extended (ie: anything more than a couple of hours) sessions.
The cinema immersion is stunning, but nothing compares to the “immersive video” you can get. When the lady falls off the high-wire… Or the shark comes right up to you… The resolution is sufficiently high, and the match to your eyes is sufficiently good, that it really is possible to lose yourself in the moment.
Even my rotting corpse won’t let you take this thing away from me…
