The biggest difference over the last 50 years is how ridiculously cheap everything has become. (I used to read SIGGRAPH when it was a dead-tree journal, and it wasn't that the displays necessary for WIMP didn't exist back then; it's just that display memory was prohibitively expensive until the 80s)
