I love using the GnuCash program. It took a while to figure out at first, but we've got over 12 years of personal transactions in GC now. Just the action of manually entering transactions helps us be more aware of spending. I've even used it for small time consulting and investment portfolio management, so it's a really great all-around tool. Last but not least, I appreciate that it's continued to work perfectly all these years without unnecessary UI changes.
For family finances we use KMyMoney. It has good enough reports and forecast features. I can also add investments and sync the value with a click of a button.
I tried GnuCash a few times but never really got it to work. Thanks for reminding me it exists. It's time to revisit.
Seconding GnuCash - it ain't pretty but once you figure it out it's a simple and very powerful tool. I often toy with the idea of moving to plain text accounting tools but it would be yet another learning curve to climb for questionable benefit.
Unfortunately I've had a couple of segfaults when importing transactions since moving to 5.x. Hopefully those bugs are ironed out by now
