"The flat stones ... may be precursors to later ninja weapons" To call that tenuous would be act of extreme generosity.


I like it: a cool alternative to the traditional "may have been used for religious or sacramental purposes". Try substituting it in other archaeological write-ups: "the first-dynasty sarcophagus was found alongside a variety of ninja weapon prototypes..."


Well, but why stop there?
