Sorry for my ignorance, but then how the "brew" thingy works? that seems to install a lot of software without Apple blessing - is that suddenly ok?

Homebrew? That's OS X. OS X doesn't have the restrictions that iOS does. For example, f.lux has been distributed just fine on OS X for
years

The Mac App Store has basically the same restrictions as the iOS App Store, but unlike iOS, OS X does not require that apps be installed via the Mac App Store.
