Unfortunately, patent attorneys are required to write patents in understandable English. This is what 'understandable English' has turned into after decades of legal precedent on what that means.

For example, you will see numbers written out longhand in patents - eg, 'two hundred and fifty six', because that is supposed to be more understandable than 256.
