Brits living in Spain is a classic example

Brits living anywhere outside of Britain is a classic example - exemplified by the clubs and societies formed around the world when the sun didn't set in/on their empire.

“Sony BMG initially denied that the rootkits were harmful. It then released an uninstaller for one of the programs that merely made the program's files invisible while also installing additional software that could not be easily removed, collected an email address from the user and introduced further security vulnerabilities.”

That’s diabolical

It was likely very illegal as well, but you know big company and a legal system that is/was decades behind the state of the art

Turns out there has been at least one fatality

Sorry for the offtopicness but could you please email hn@ycombinator.com? I did a trick with one of your posts that I should probably confess to.

Then they lied! Thanks!

The pickled plum ones I had in Tokyo were delicious

I fell in love with them when I visited Tokyo and I was pleasantly surprised to find them in a lot of grocery stores in Paris recently. Unfortunately, we don’t seem to get them in the UK at least not in the big supermarkets.

I haven't seen any in supermarkets, but bought two in a shop in central London recently and it cost £9, which is eye watering compared to Japan 7-Eleven prices.

I had feeling they were easier to find in London.

I happen to work near a place that does them, but I couldn't find many places that specialise in selling takeaway onigiri.

Damn, and I thought 3€ a piece was a lot.

That was with a discount too!

I don’t see these replacing phones anytime soon

There was another execution in South Carolina on Friday despite new evidence of innocence

https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/sep/20/south-caroli...

That case is even worse as it rested fully on the testimony of the other robber, which he made to get a lesser sentence and later rescinded:

> Prosecutors had no forensic evidence connecting Allah to the shooting. Surveillance footage at the store showed two masked men with guns, but they were not identifiable. The state’s case rested on testimony from Allah’s friend and co-defendant, Steven Golden, who was also charged in the robbery and murder. As their joint trial was beginning, Golden pleaded guilty to murder, armed robbery and criminal conspiracy and agreed to testify against Allah. Golden, who was 18 at the time of the robbery, said Allah shot Graves.

> Golden said he agreed to plead guilty and testify when prosecutors assured him he would not face the death penalty or a life sentence – a deal that was not disclosed to the jury.

> “I substituted [Allah] for the person who was really with me,” he wrote, saying he concealed the identity of the “real shooter” out of fear that “his associates might kill me”. He did not identify this person.

If your friend is wrongly facing the death penalty and you know they’re innocent there’s no reason to not name the person you claim is the real shooter.

Pretty disturbing reading about predatory behaviour on Roblox:

https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2024-roblox-pedophile-pro...

Good god that article shows how immoral roblox's owner is. They also seem to be very ignorant about online abuse, probably intentionally.

A Catch-22 situation

What are the challenges involved which makes it so difficult?

Off the top of my head: rocks, water, debris, inconsistent medium, length of the drill bit needed, tool breakage
